Certification Process

Check if you're eligible

Each certification has unique eligibility requirements. Refer to the certification you have selected to understand its specific requirements.

Candidates must show:

  • Verified years of industry experience
  • Completion of required Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or attendance of a NARI certification preparatory course corresponding to your selected certification.

Decide how to prepare for your exam

Before applying for certification, decide which of the following exam preparation paths fits your schedule and learning style:

  • Online Certification Preparatory Courses – Comprehensive, instructor-led, multi-week online classes (95%+ candidates select this option)
    • Check out the online prep course start dates here.
    • You will be able to enroll in an online preparatory course as part of your certification application.
    • You must enroll in certification in order to enroll in its corresponding preparatory course.
  • In-Person Local NARI Chapter Courses – Instructor-led, multi-week classes may be offered in person by select NARI chapters (check with your local NARI chapter for availability)
  • Self-Study – Use the program study materials provided upon enrollment to prepare for the exam.

Apply for certification

  • Submit an online certification application demonstrating compliance with the prerequisites of the program you’ve selected.
  • Certification and preparatory course fees are due at the time of application.
  • You will be able to enroll in a preparatory course via the certification application.

All applications are carefully reviewed by NARI Certification staff to confirm eligibility.

Take your certification exam

After you have enrolled in certification and attended a preparatory course or self-studied, you must complete and pass a comprehensive online exam of up to 200 questions, proctored by a live online proctor to ensure examination integrity.

You have two years from the time you enroll in certification to take and pass your exam.

You get three tries at passing your certification exam. Your first try is included in your initial certification fee but a $50 retest fee applies if you need to retake your exam.

If you are unable to pass your exam within two years of enrollment and within three tries, you will have to re-enroll in the program and pay the certification fee again, if you wish to continue to pursue the certification.

You can review the exam schedule and examination information here.

Don't forget to renew your certification

Certification is an ongoing commitment. To maintain your credential, you will need to complete annual recertification requirements for continuing education to stay current with industry standards and best practices.

Check out NARI's On-Demand Educational Library for continuing education at your fingertips.

Annual renewal fees apply.

Refer to your specific certification's renewal requirements and fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

NARI Certification Standards and exam questions are created and regularly reviewed through a consensus-based process by respected remodeling professionals who bring technical expertise and effective business management knowledge. This ensures each certification reflects the highest standards in the remodeling industry.

NARI's certification programs are overseen by the independent NARI Certification Board, which upholds fairness, integrity, and consistency throughout the certification process.

No, you do not need to be a NARI member to become certified but employees of NARI member companies receive significant discounts on the certification, prep course, and renewal fees.

No, you will enroll in your chosen certification's preparatory course at the same time that you apply for certification via the online certification application form.

You can also choose to self-study, in which case you will want to make sure you do not add the preparatory course to your cart during the application process. Your certification study materials will be provided to you when your certification application is approved and you will be responsible for preparing yourself for the certification exam.

Over 95% of certification candidates opt to enroll in a preparatory course versus going it alone.

Keep in mind that not all exam content will be covered in the study materials or in the online course. The certification exam also requires you to draw on your existing knowledge and experience. For instance, you may have to be familiar with construction codes which cannot be covered in detail in the online prep course or in the study materials. You will have to refer to the corresponding code books to obtain this knowledge.

Yes, you may pursue all certifications that you qualify for and add several credentials to your name. Many NARI certified professionals hold multiple certifications.

That said, we do not recommend pursuing multiple certifications at the same time as it can become overwhelming to study for multiple certifications simultaneously.

Certification must be renewed on an annual basis prior to your certification's expiration date.

You may reinstate your certification within a five year period of its original expiration date. A $100 reinstatement fee will apply in addition to your certification's renewal fee.
